"I don’t want to give in and settle for some specialty. I don't want to spend my life studying and restudying the same fifty pieces of music. It would bore me to death. I want to conduct. I want to play the piano.

I want to write for Hollywood. I want to write symphonic music. I want to keep on trying to be, in the full sense of that wonderful word, a musician. I also want to teach. I want to write books and poetry. And I think I can still do justice to them all. But I can’t do them all at once. I have to learn to do one at a time, and to give it all my strength until I’ve done it right. Mozart, Mendelssohn, Bach, Haydn -- they were all performers and conductors as well as composers, and they did a lot of other things too. Only then, there was time” (1957) 

在一九五七年，指揮家伯恩斯坦說過「我不甘於一樣專長。我也不想要花一輩子的時間重覆學習同樣的那五十首曲子，那會使人生多麼無趣。我想要指揮，我想要彈鋼琴，我想要為電影寫音樂，我想要寫交響曲。我想要一直努力的去嘗試體現「音樂家」一詞最完整的美好意義。我也想教育，想要寫書和詩詞，而且我認為我全部都能完成，但是我沒有辦法同時做所有事情。所以我必須學會一次做一樣，並且盡我所能直到我真正做對了。 莫扎特、孟德爾頌、巴哈、海頓 - 他們都同時身為演奏家和指揮家，以及作曲家，而且他們還做了很多其他事情。只有那樣，才是掌握了時間」

今年是他的一百歲誕辰紀念。無論是充滿影響力的個人魅力，激昂感人的詮釋，還是西城故事裡那些仍舊朗朗上口的旋律，甚至是他的私人生活都仍讓我們充滿好奇。身為藝術家與學者的他，在家中收藏了無數書籍。而其中他最喜歡的作家為俄羅斯美國作家 Vladimir Nabokov 弗拉基米爾‧納博科夫。最喜歡的兩本書則是英國作家 Lewis Carroll 路易斯·卡洛奇的知名小說「愛麗絲夢遊仙境」與「鏡中奇緣」。美國WQXR古典音樂廣播電台日前便分享了一部分書單。包括經典名作，詩集，以及當時曾引起許多爭議的小說，每一頁伯恩斯坦都曾翻閱無數次。
